LEED, or Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, is a green building certification program that recognizes best-in-class building strategies and practices. To receive LEED certification, building projects satisfy prerequisites and earn points to achieve different levels of certification. Prerequisites and credits differ for each rating system, and teams choose the best fit for their project.
Efficient lighting is so essential to a sustainable home that it can even count for up to two points in LEED BD+C: Homes if the project team is able to use energy-efficient fixtures and lamps to meet residents’ illumination needs while reducing the home’s total wattage from set baselines.
It is recommended to install high-efficacy lighting and meet or exceed the requirements for lighting power density for hard-wired fixtures. Ideally, efficient interior lighting has a lighting power density of 1.1 W/sq.ft. or less.
